Massage Your Pup

Like most of us, you are wooed by the sweet and endearing eyes of your puppy or kitten. For some, you might have taken them into your home as a small and delicate newborn.

There is something that softens the human heart when loved by an animal. Nursing homes filled with aged people often delight in furry visitors. Personally, I had wonderful cats and dogs in my life and they have offered me joy and companionship. For some, the daunting idea of added responsibility might turn them away from the joy of adding a dog or cat to their family but you would be missing out on many laughs and countless hours of affection, as animals love much with no judgement.

I believe animals need a voice and must be protected. Think of all the caged animals in laboratories around the world that are used in experiments for make up or skin care products. They are abused, scared and alone. Animals feel and love. They remember and show loyalty. They are part of our community. For the childless couple, they are the children. They add so much value to our lives and most of them are misunderstood but so eager to please us.

So, in this post I’m going to encourage you to massage your pup (or cat) because affection, through a loving touch is also a wonderful way to bond with them. After a long day at the office or driving in this crazy traffic, massage time with your dog or cat can prove to be therapeutic to the both of you. It teaches you to be still and move slow. Actions we most likely aren’t familiar with. So let’s get started.

1. Find a quiet and comfy place for you and your puppy or kitten.

2. Choose a time frame you’re comfortable with and set the timer (e.g. 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes)

3. Begin with slow long movement from the head to the legs in a sweeping motion and give words of loving affirmation.

4. massage the neck by gently kneading the area for about 30 seconds.

5. move down the spine and knead the muscles surrounding the spine  all the way to the lower back.

6. Perform sweeping motion again throughout whole body

7. finish by massage all four legs in a slow kneading motion.

I promise you that your pet will remember this act with gratitude. Do not see it as a chore but as a wonderful way to connect with your animal. Do not attempt this if your dog or cat has  shown aggressive behavior in the past or is dealing with serious behavior issues unless in the presence of a trainer. If all is well, you will leave your unique massage session feeling relaxed as well. Away from technology and connecting with another being in an intentional way is a healing act. For those of you that struggle with time, dedicate just a few minutes and welcome the chance to spend quality time with your dog,cat or whichever pet makes your home happy.
